Campfire Legend: The Hookman

Have you ever known or maybe played Campfire Legend? It's an old game, I think, but I just enjoyed it like watching a movie because of its storyline. Campfire Legend itself is a hidden object adventure game for PC created by GameHouse Studio. This time, I want to review Campfire Legend, my favorite series game, focusing solely on the storyline, akin to a movie review.

I find it quite challenging to solve the puzzles, so if you enjoy the 'hard think' aspect, challenge yourself to solve the problems until the end. However, if you find it too mentally taxing, you can resort to walkthrough cheats and strategies (like I shamelessly did) LOL. For this post, I aim to review the storyline of Campfire Legend: The Hookman, and if I am satisfied with my writing, I will continue with Campfire Legend: The Babysitter. So far, I'm only familiar with both free Campfire Legend games. I don’t know if there is a third series yet.

Campfire Legend: The Hookman

This game unfolds like a story within a story. At the start, we witness a group of girls gathered around a campfire, recounting a mysterious tale to their friends. The narrative takes us back to a moonlit night, years ago. Christine, the protagonist, had planned a romantic weekend with her boyfriend at her parents’ cabin. However, Patrick's tardiness led her best friend to drop her off instead.

Upon arriving at her parents’ cabin, Christine discovers a note left by her parents, indicating the key's location in the usual hiding spot (under a stone). With the key in hand, Christine attempts to enter the cabin, only to find the electricity out. To restore power, she must open the shutters to let in some moonlight and access the fuse box in the basement, but the fuse needs fixing.

After gathering the necessary items to open the shutter, Christine ventures into the house's basement to repair the fuse. While searching for more supplies in the shed, she notices her suitcase missing, only to find it back later, but in disarray. After restoring her belongings, she proceeds to fix the fuse.

Once the lights come on, Christine is startled to find the place ransacked and hears a noise. Fearing danger, she hurries upstairs to her bedroom. Turning on the radio, she listens to a shocking news report on 100 FM: "repeating our top story… police have issued an all-points bulletin for what is being called the 'Hookman' killer, who was seen near Still Water sanatorium. He is still at large and extremely dangerous…"

After hearing the news, Christine rushes to the living room to call the police. She dials the number and Sheriff Cahill answers.
"Police department, Sheriff Cahill speaking," he says.
"Uhh, I’m calling to report a break-in," Christine replies.
"Is the intruder still in the house, ma’am?" Sheriff Cahill inquires.
"Well, no, but it’s really weird and there’s…" Christine begins, but is interrupted.
"Ma’am, I can’t spare anyone right now for 'really weird,' so it’ll be a few hours," the sheriff responds curtly.

Disappointed with the sheriff's response, Christine is further shocked when a man enters the cabin without knocking and casually says, "Baby, sorry I’m late. Hey, what’s wrong?" It's Patrick, Christine’s boyfriend. She informs Patrick about the break-in and her concerns, but he dismisses them, assuring her that he's there for her now.

Despite Christine's insistence about the killer on the loose at the sanatorium, Patrick brushes it off, suggesting it was likely nothing to worry about. He offers to take her for a ride to calm her nerves, but their plans are thwarted when they discover the car is stuck.

Patrick then headed to the shed to see if he could find something for the carburetor. While Christine was alone in the car, she glanced in the rearview mirror and saw a headless figure walking behind their car. Suddenly, Patrick startled her. Still in shock, Christine could only stare at Patrick with a scared expression, but he reassured her to relax and not look at him like that. He returned from the shed with some starter fluid and suggested they go to the lookout spot by the lake. Despite Christine's lingering fear about the break-in, Patrick claimed he had seen a wild cat behind the shed, which likely got in looking for food. He refused to discuss the killer mentioned on the radio and urged her to focus on building a fire, insisting it would be fun. Christine, still unsettled, questioned Patrick's sanity, but he brushed off her concerns, instructing her to find a good spot while he gathered wood.

Eventually, Christine finished setting up the campfire, but Patrick mentioned he had been stargazing and watching the meteor shower. Christine couldn't understand how he could be so relaxed while she was still anxious about the break-in. Patrick offered to fetch chocolate and marshmallows, but as Christine heard the car struggling, she rushed to find Patrick, only to discover he was missing.

Without hesitation, Christine decided to repair the car herself to escape. She found the slashed tire and remembered the spare was in the trunk. After gathering the necessary items, she began changing the tire and then proceeded to fix the engine, needing to search for a wire. As she completed her work, Christine noticed someone standing nearby, assuming it was Patrick. However, when she called out his name, the figure fled, leaving Christine unsettled.

Searching for Patrick by the lakeside, Christine spotted the mysterious figure again, but he walked away when she called out. She followed him to a boathouse near the lake, where she found a punch card machine and a paper detailing "Haken and his formula X76." After dealing with the punch card, Christine continued her search, suspecting Patrick might have wandered through a secret entrance. She discovered an old gate covered in roses leading to a cemetery. Upon entering, she found a crypt, and as she ventured inside, she was overwhelmed by the eerie atmosphere.

The crypt appeared to be a place where someone conducted experiments, filled with chemical acids, bones, and medical files. Christine stumbled upon her own medical file and articles about Dr. Haken, suspecting his involvement in the deaths reported in the newspapers found within the crypt. She discovered items belonging to a woman, some burned, a box of toys for a boy, medical equipment, and more burned items.

As Christine delved deeper into the mystery, she was startled by the appearance of a ghostly girl who revealed herself as Lilly Haken. Lilly explained that her father, Dr. Haken, had kept them there, attempting to use their remains to bring them back. She pleaded with Christine to burn their remains and files so they could find peace.

Christine complied, gathering the remains and files and burning them in an oven. The spirits of Lilly and her siblings thanked Christine before the oven exploded. Determined to escape, Christine sought out wires to fix the car. Suddenly, she heard banging on the door, and The Hookman appeared, forcing his way inside with his hook.

Patrick arrived wielding a block of wood, assisting Christine in holding off The Hookman. He urged her to flee and get the car while he distracted their assailant. As they fled to the car, they were confronted by The Hookman breaking into the back. They raced to the police station for help, but as they looked back, they saw Dr. Haken's hook still hanging from their car.

If you're not fully immersed yet, just dive into the game. The whereabouts of Patrick and the identity of the headless man remain mysteries, to be unraveled in Campfire Legend: The Babysitter.
